About Us

Film Northants is an award-winning not-for-profit short film festival set up in 2008. The organisation aims to nurture, showcase and promote the talent of people in Northamptonshire and to raise the county's profile. Amateur and professional film-makers of all ages are invited to take part each year by entering a film of no more than five minutes, which must be filmed in Northamptonshire.

In 2011 Film Northants was winner in the Pride in Northants awards for the category of Raising the Profile of Northamptonshire. The same year Film Northants teamed up with the Favourites Film Festival in Berlin and winners of the Film Northants public vote are submitted to this international event each year.

Film Northants runs in association with Cineworld Cinemas, to give entrants the chance of watching their own film at the cinema and winning fantastic trophies and prizes. The festival has a range of partners each year who help with finance, promotions and prizes.

The Team

Film Northants is run by a group of enthusiastic volunteers (i.e film geeks) who all live and work in Northamptonshire. It is made up of a formal committee and members of the public. There are journalists, cabinet makers, logistic development managers, film lecturers and students all involved. We always welcome new members, the only criteria being a love of film and creativity. Please email info@filmnorthants.co.uk to find out more.

Committee

Chair and head of partnerships: Lily Canter

Film Northants founder Lily Canter was randomly inspired to set up the festival in 2008 during a spot of home cooking. Lily religiously reads Total Film magazine and is only recently getting over a fervoured obsession of Christian Bale. Lily is a journalist and lecturer who specialises in social media. When she is not multi-tasking Lily is researching a PhD in online journalism and teaching at De Montfort University. She is currently watching (and loving) Supernatural and Sons of Anarchy and classes her favourite films as Pump Up the Volume, Blade, Anchorman and naturally American Pyscho

Committee member: Callum Jones

Northampton Chronicle & Echo education reporter Callum Jones is a new addition to the Film Northants team in 2011. During a visit to South Korea, the 26-year-old was once mistaken for Leonardo DiCaprio and is a big fan of the work of his famous lookalike, (ok maybe its not a close resemblance) including Inception, Shutter Island and Catch Me If You Can. Other film favourites are Sixth Sense, V for Vendetta and Slumdog Millionaire. He’s also partial to the odd musical as well, in particular West Side Story and Grease.

Head of finance: Julie Sampson

Champagne-loving Jules works as an international logistics consultant. Her favourite films are an undecided contest between Jaws and Leon but she has occasionally been known to enjoy a good old weep to The Champ early in the morning whilst nursing a hangover. Her first film-related memory is sneaking downstairs to catch a peak of Hammer House Horror.

Head of event management (co-opted member): Mark Dayman

Iron Maiden fan Mark, runs his own cabinet making firm The Art of Wood, in Northampton. His favourite film is Young Frankenstein and he is also partial to episodes of Battlestar Galatica and Starsky & Hutch. He is currently learning guitar and considering taking up skydiving as a new hobby following an "awesome" jump in Brackley.

Head of promotions: Nick Spoors

Northampton Chronicle & Echo health reporter ‘Doctor’ Nick Spoors first felt the love of Film Northants back in the summer of 2008 and was delighted to be asked to come aboard in 2010. His fantasy feast of film favourites would include Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (on VHS) for starters, a main course of The Wind that Shakes the Barley and Anchorman to finish followed by an Akira-shaped cigar (in Japanese with English subtitles). To drink: a large glass of When We Were Kings, please waiter.

Head of technical (co-opted member): Stacey Swift

Despite what you might assume, Stacey Swift is not a girl and would rather gouge his eyes out with a spoon than watch a romantic comedy. He loves the films of Shane Meadows, especially A Room for Romeo Brass, and Dead Man’s Shoes. His favourite comedy is the French masterpiece Man Bites Dog. His biggest claim to fame is that his childhood babysitter was once run over by Rolf Harris. We’re fairly sure it was accidental though.

Secretary: Hannah Williams

Flame haired welsh woman Hannah Williams works as a reporter for the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph. She is a fan of all films based in her homeland such as Very Annie Mary and The Edge of Love. Her all time favourite film is Sliding Doors, while she also loves nothing better than to put on her fishnets and enjoy a viewing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
